The Yarra Valley
The Yarra Valley is synonymous with world-class cool climate wines and this stunning wine region is located only a stone’s throw from Melbourne.
It is suitably named for the majestic Yarra River or Birrarung that flows through the region. The river was significant to the Indigenous Wurundjeri people. In the language of the Wurundjeri people, Birrarung means Place of Mists and Shadows. You will understand the significance of this once on our arrival in the valley, especially if you travel with us during the winter. Interestingly, the Wurundjeri people lived around the Yarra Valley for over 30,000 years and the Yarra River was central to their survival.
The Yarra Valley is one of the oldest wine regions in Australia. The first vines were planted in the 1830s on the property which is today known as Chateau Yering. Interestingly, wine production stopped in 1921 due to the popularity of fortified wines but thankfully, the winemakers returned to the Valley in the late 1960s. They have, of course, been making world-class cool climate wines ever since.
