This is a rare and truly unique experience which could very well be a highlight of your visit to Australia. Not only will you have an opportunity to witness these unique and mysterious creatures, you’ll also have the chance to interact with the amazing and friendly (female) Platypus.

Following this tour you may choose to extend your day by visiting some wineries in the Yarra Valley to taste the wines and enjoy a sumptuous lunch among the vines. These options are outlined below.

To conclude this trip, your guide will take you back to your Melbourne hotel where you can relax and look through your special photos from this once in a lifetime experience.

About the Platypus

The platypus is one of nature’s most unusual animals. In fact, the first scientists didn’t believe that the animal was real at first. The platypus has been described as a mix between a duck, a beaver and an otter.

It is very rare to spot a platypus in the wild. They are only found in Australia so this is your chance.

Some fun facts about the Platypus

  • They lay eggs: The platypus is one of only two mammals in the world that lay eggs (the other is the echidna).
  • The males are venomous: they have sharp stingers on their heels
  • Platypuses or Platypi don’t have a stomach : Like the echidna and many fish, they have a gullet that connects straight to their intestines
  • They have a sixth sense: The platypus’ bill acts like an internal GPS, allowing them to hunt without using their eyes, ears or nose!
